M1186 - Bear Lake Section (Miocene of the United States)

Also known as M1186

Where: Aleutians East County, Alaska (56.0° N, 160.2° W: paleocoordinates 56.8° N, 158.6° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Bear lake Formation, Late/Upper Miocene (11.6 - 5.3 Ma)

• Along the eastern shore of Port Moller and inland to the northeast for many miles past Bear Lake there is a thick sequence of sandstone and conglomerate that is distinct from any of the older Tertiary strata. These beds consist of at least 5000 feet of volcanic and reworked sedimentary debris, including clasts of early conglomerates, and a rich fauna of Miocene fossils. The lower part contains the middle Miocene Mytilus middendorffi fauna typical of the Unga Congolomerate, here considered to be the basal member of this formation.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; lithified, shelly/skeletal, brown, gray sandstone and shelly/skeletal conglomerate

• Largely marine rocks.
• Interbedded tan to brown and gray sandstones and conglomerates with very abundant fossils.

Size class: macrofossils

Collection methods: quarrying,

• Collections examined by F.S. MacNeil and D. Taylor (USGS), 1962. Collections are reposited at USGS Menlo Park, or presumably USNM (not reported)
